Though the Earthen Village is a new and fairly large undertaking, there is reason to believe that it may be permitted by land-use decision makers here in Sonoma County, California or nearby. For example, in Mendocino County there was recently considerable political support for a similar project but 10-20 times larger—see www.mendovito.com. Sonoma Mountain Village in Sonoma County is another example of an unprecedented settlement design. SMV (with 2000 housing units, etc.) has already received its land use approvals. Many past conventional developments in the North Bay have had 100-200 units so the size of the Village is not outlandish.
And the rapidly growing awareness of the crisis-need to create more sustainable housing and more secure, and connected communities in an era of worrisome change, further enhanced by the likely global-warming induced drought, is paradoxically helpful to gaining these approvals. Professionally prepared conceptual drawings and other details of the plan will be required for public presentations and the Village Team’s tasks will include creating them.
Around Sonoma County, whenever there is a public hearing on a new housing project there is always some neighborhood real or imagined opposition. The Village is unique in its vision & benefits for people and the Earth but it will have its “NIMBY”s claiming it will destroy their lives. This makes it hard for elected land-use decision-makers to approve even wonderful proposals.
But the Village has a “special power”. If 100 or more families come to that hearing and say they are not a developer, but committed to be a Founder of the Village, and they are local, or they need affordable housing, or they want the security of having their own home, or they want to be part of a strong community, or they want to live in a way that regenerates Nature–not erodes Her…or all of the above…it would be unheard of and completely change the game!
